!! th Week...

Perhaps it is the 11th week, and yeah it is the countdown week. Many of my friends are saying Hooray, yahoo...the same thing right? But not me, somehow I felt my duty for these students is not over yet. These kids amaze me with their curiosity to learn language. And not to forget the sweet relationship that they have formed with us. Although it is only practicum, which means there is no real connection as a permanent teacher, I do feel, the responsibility to educate these kids. I feel like a real teacher whose dedication to make these students understand and acquire language is constantly growing. The daily research to find material to provide them with enough knowledge is quite tiring but I do feel that it is essential for the teaching and learning process. The first few weeks of teaching, I started using the textbook which I felt, quite boring sometimes. Therefore materials are to be produced constantly and updated always because there is an urgency to educate these students along with the same pace the world goes.

Reflection 3

Students are cute when they listen to our instruction and they are the ugliest when it they just don’t listen. Today the class started right after the assembly. Its 5 minutes late, because the assembly ended late. I entered peacefully, and started to give them comprehension work because the topic Health is Wealth has ended, and its time to drill them on this topic. When I started to go around the class checking for cleanliness and see whether the students are doing their work or not, I found out that some students are not showing any respect to the material that I have given to them. It annoyed me to see those articles lying on the ground, with zero intention to take it and keep it. One particulat student, I shall not reveal the name, don’t even realise that his paper is lost when I found it below the desk of another female girl. What an obscene thing to see, when education is not given respected. And I started to get fed up with the students’ attitude, and started to lecture them on the importance of education. I was so upset, that I asked them whether they wanted me to go out of the class.  I thought this class is okay, but today’s incident just alerted me that students are not always what we think they are. They can be really annoying  and troublesome at times. I hope I made myself clear about how they should behave in my class. I just hope I won’t loose my temper because I know, when I loose my temper it won’t be good, and they wouldn’t like it anyway.

Reflection 2

You know one of those days, where you feel like so excited and bang, you found an interesting lesson. And that is what I did in the 3rd observation ( feels so nice when its the 3rd observation) by my guidance teacher. The night before I was cracking my head to think what can I do to make the lesson interesting and interactive. At first I was thinking of playing a video to the students, but then later I thought, I have done video before, so lets make something different this time around. And just about the time, it came to me like the holy light you get from the heaven. Breaking news English. I thought this would be a different approach for the students. And so I started off by showing them the black bag that contains a few products that is related to personal hygiene. I asked the students to guess what these products are, and I managed to get them to guess the product by giving clues and prompt from their answers. Students know what they are about to learn. However, I did felt that I was not making enough connection from the set induction and the practise stage, which is the listening activity. My question was, did the students understand the link between the set induction and the activity in the practise stage. I hope so, and they do understand. However I believe the next time I plan my lesson, I want to emphasize more on the set induction and relate it in a much better way to the topic and the practise stage so that there is a flow. Practise stage went well, with the game XO. I divided the students into two teams of A and B. Students nowadays are just good listeners right? I thought the questions that I have prepared would be hard, but for some of them it is just a piece of cake. But at last the winner is the guys team. Moving on from the practise stage, I handed them worksheets for them to fill in the blank while listening. I played twice so that those who did not get at the first time able to write it the 2nd time. It went well, and I discussed the answers. Students seem to be comprehending the text really well. Its just about the time when I continue to production stage, whereby I divided the students into groups of 5 and 6. There were 5 groups altogether and two groups will do a poster on promoting healthy lifestyle. For example a poster on the benefits of using soap.  As usual they were excited and I was excited to see their end product. Hope they can come up with some real good poster. I know I sound boring in this second reflection, what to do...I haven’t taken my lunch yet! So I am going now...

Reflection 1

I started my lesson a bit shaky, with some words shaking on my lips afraid of the lecturer sitting not at the back, but sitting in front. It was not , no, not even little like debate. In debate, I feel like “hey, you think you can talk better than me? Let me show you my ‘bomb’ (don’t get the wrong definition of it please). Mr. Seva was like waiting for me to start if off, but I was like the rocket full of fuel, but somehow the ignition is not working, and at one point I felt, I am going to explode just like the space shuttle. My chicken dance was not so chicken, it was like duck trying to imitate a chicken ( can u imagine?) It was stiff, and I was not chicky like those university students who are just chicken when it comes to chicken dance. But somehow I just got it finished. And proceeded into my next stage, that is practice. “Are you smarter than the fifth grader...? “ Are you ? This is the game I played with the students at the practice stage. The students were very excited because I told them I will give them prize ( I always lie to them...hehehe). The game was interesting too, and I realised it when I saw that flash of light from the ray of teeth that belongs to the one person that I wanted to make happy. You must be thinking my students. Its my lecturer. Owh thank God he laughed, that’s  like a holy grail for me to move on and play the game more intensively. Although the objective of the game accomplished, I did felt that I did some mistakes especially in the formulation of the questions. I realised my mistake and he did too. Proceeding into the next level that is production, I manage to get the students into groups of 5. I gave them 5 envelopes, each containing one picture of an exercise.  The students must come up with a mind map as creatively as they could. And then I let them to do it. A big relive from my heart when  he said he has to leave a bit early.  I listened to his comments bravely (you know its like talking to the father in the church, more like confession). He was happy, students were happy and I was happy too. My hope? Do better next time, plan an extraordinary lesson with fireworks, club music, etc...etc....( I can go on...) just ignore...cya...
